There Are No Accidents

Accidents just happen, right? The term accident seems to attribute injury to random chance or some unpredictable factor. But nost injuries can be prevented if people plan, avoid risky behaviors and follow safety advice.

In 2003, unintentional injuries caused nearly 1 million deaths.

Safety experts now use this term instead of accidents because these injures usually involve preventable factors such as:

Preoccupation: If you are stressed or distracted, chances are your mind is not on the task at hand.

Fatigue: Sleepiness interferes with daily activities; drowsiness impairs judgment and reaction time. An estimated 100,000 reported crashes result from driver fatigue annually.

Alcohol Use: In 2003 alcohol was involved in 41% of all traffic fatalities and countless injuries and deaths from violence and falls each year.

Poor Housekeeping: Spills not cleaned up promptly, files drawers left open, and electrical cords and other objects on floors lead to slips, trips and falls.

Risk Taking: Sometimes we don’t wear seat belts or hard hats, thinking, it can’t hurt this one time. It can and it does.

Lack Of Enforcement

Is The Key Cause of Failure to Use PPE

Personal protective equipment plays a key role in helping your people stay safe on the job. That's a given. But safety gear only works if people use itand all too often they don't.

Why don't workers wear personal protective equipment (PPE) if they know it's required and that it is to their benefit to do so? According to a survey commissioned by the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), the main reason is that their employers do not require or enforce its use.

As a supervisor, you need to communicate the need and benefit of PPE to your workersover and over again, if necessary. You also need to be prepared to enforce PPE use. Failure to do so sends a message that PPE use isn't really that important, and that's not a message you can afford to send.

It's important for you to be consistent in enforcing the proper use of PPEby imposing progressive discipline when warranted and by rewarding correct use. When properly applied, discipline and rewards are two tools at your disposal for ensuring the proper use of PPE in your crew.

Remember that the purpose of discipline should be to correct behavior, not to punish. Employees should know that every time they don't follow rules for the correct use of PPE, they will be disciplined, but that the reason is that you care about them and don't want them to get injured.

It's all too easy for supervisors to say nothing to their crew who use PPE correctly, because it is the behavior that is expected. But recognizing positive safety methods leads to better and even safer job performance. Positive reinforcement doesn't have to be expensive. It can range from compliments to small tokens of appreciation that let your crew know you care.

Is Your Ride Safe

Hitching a ride is a dangerous practice. A backhoe operator giving a co-worker a ride on the side of the machine is an unsafe practice, which could result in the passengers death if they hit a bump in the road. Workers riding in the back of a pick-up truck is unsafe. Workers may think hitching a ride on truck beds or one-person machinery saves time in getting from point A to point B, but any time saved is lost when the crew has to stop for an accident. The rider faces the possibility of head injury and getting run over by the machine hes on. A good rule of thumb to remember when riding on a piece of equipment is to always wear your seatbelt. If you dont have a seatbelt, or a seat, you should not be on the machine while it is operating.
